Oscar Alvarez entered the film industry in 2004 when he had earned the opportunity to work with Oscar® nominated Writer/Director, David O. Russell (American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook, The Fighter) on his Iraqi War documentary, Soldiers Pay, as Production Manager. In his role, Alvarez oversaw day-to- day operations of Russell’s production company, Kanzeon.
He remained with Kanzeon until late 2008 when he departed to produce his first independent short film by Writer/Director Peter Chen, Child Reduction Act.
In 2011, Alvarez partnered with filmmaker Kevin Derek to produce the award-winning feature documentary film, Empty Hand: The Real Karate Kids, cited in Black Belt Magazine as “A MUST SEE...the first real Karate movie in years.” In the following year, Alvarez worked alongside Production Designer/Producer Todd Jeffery (“Brockmire”) and Writer/Director Dustin Thomas Cartmill to produce cerebral comedy short The Wolf, starring Zach Cregger (“About a Boy”) and Caitriona Balfe (“Outlander”).
Alvarez reunited with Kevin Derek in 2013 to produce his second feature documentary film, The Real Miyagi featuring Dolph Lundgren, Steven Seagal, Fumio Demura & more. In 2015 Alvarez sold The Real Miyagi to Netflix, securing a three-year worldwide distribution deal, playing to more than 40 countries.
Most recently, Alvarez completed his and Derek’s latest feature documentary, More Than Miyagi: The Pat Morita Story starring Ralph Macchio, Martin Kove, Esai Morales, William Zabka, Tommy Chong, Efren Ramirez, Henry Winkler and James Hong, among others -- a “who’s who” of stars, including Morita’s Widow, Evelyn, came together to support the bio-doc about the beloved actor. It was released worldwide in February 2021 to massive critical acclaim and fan enthusiasm; it is rated 100% on both the TOMATOMETER® and audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Alvarez and Derek have also formalized their successful working relationship with the establishment of a production company called LOVE PROJECT FILMS. Alvarez splits his time between Los Angeles and Montreal, where his daughter is in production on a CW series.
